Lecture 1 Flashcards
Time to double knowledge
12 hours
What is evidence based med and what is it not?
It is mathematical, high quality research, and large sample sizes. This helps inform clinical decision making, set protocol/standards and determine reimbursement.
It is not replacement of judgment, all inclusive or diminish other treatment methods.
Scientific Method
Empirical observation Form hypothesis Experiment Modify hypothesis Retest Communicate results
4 alternatives to EBM
- Anecdotal: narrative based with low evidence.
- Press cutting: Emphasizes results
- Consensus: Protocol based on consensus
- Cost minimization: Goal to care for pt but limit costs.
Anecdotal. What is it and what are some examples?
Narrative based.
Low level of evidence. N=1
Useful for some- not all.
EX: Harold Ridley observing effects of PMMA in eyes vs glass. Better outcome= first IOL and new CL material.
Ex: Latisse used to treat hypotrichosis
Ex: Intense pulsed light used for rosacea
Press cutting. What is it? what is a disadvantage?
Emphasizes results without considering validity of study or methods. Disadvantage: Junk science. May omit risks.
Consensus. What is it, what are examples, and what is a disadvantage?
Protocol based on consensus. Less common today.
GOBSAT, Delphi, TFOS.
Disadvantage: no objective. Influenced by sponsor.
Cost minimization
Challenges: limited resources that are lower cost.
