Lecture 1 Flashcards
Describe prokaryotes
- No nucleus
- 2 groups - Archaea and Bacteria
- No organelles as such
- No membrane bound organelles
- Diverse
Describe eukaryotes
- True nucleus
- Membrane bound organelles
- Mitochondria
What is the central dogma of molecular biology
That DNA is transcribed into RNA and that the RNA is translated into protein
What are the four key macromolecules?
Sugars, Fatty acids, Amino acids and Nucleotides
What is special about mammalian cells
They are compartmentalised due to the presence of plasma membranes
What is the plasma membrane?
Selective, semi permeable barrier that maintains the correct concentration of key molecules inside the cell
List a few organelles with a single membrane
ER and Golgi apparatus
List a couple of organelles with a double membrane
Nucleus and mitochondria
What is the inside of a cell like?
Its like a viscous goo
How does movement occur in the cell?
A cytoskeleton allows this
What is homeostasis
The property of a system, especially in a living organism to regulate its internal environment so as to maintain a stable, constant condition
What is apoptosis
Programmed cell death in multicellular animals
