Aspatial data?
Daata with no geographic coordinates or spatial identifiers

geospatial locator
What is a GIS?
▪ a set of tools for collecting, storing, retrieving at will, transforming, and displaying spatial data from the real world for a particular set of purposes
▪ an information system used to manipulate, summarize, query, edit, and visualize spatial data and non-spatial information stored in a computer database
▪ a digital system for the acquisition, management, analysis, and visualization of spatial data for the purposes of planning, administering, and monitoring the natural and socioeconomic environment
▪ an automated system for the capture, storage, retrieval, analysis, and display of spatial data
▪ a computer-based system designed to manage and use geospatial data to solve spatial problems
-last one is best one
GIScience
GIScience: Geographic information science which GIS is based on
-remote sensing, old and new cartography, data communication
Misconceptions of GIS
- a GIS is simply a modified graphic arts or computer-aided design program
- . a GIS is simply a cartographic mapping program
- cartographic and GIS software can both produce high-quality accurate maps, but only GIS can compare and correlate two or more maps - a GIS is simply a software package without theoretical foundation
- traditional paper maps are just as useful as a GIS
- a GIS is no different than any other information system
