Lecture 1 Flashcards
What are microboes?
living things that are too small to be seen by the naked eye; they are found everywhere; need them to live
What are pathogens?
Microbes that cause disease
What are the 6 types of microbes?
Bacteria, archaea, algae, fungi, protozoa, & viruses
What is a prokaryote?
bacteria, usually, single-celled, no true nucleus
What is a eukaryote?
is a more complex cell that has a nucleus
Is a bacteria pro or euk?
Pro
Is archaea pro or euk?
Pro
Is algaea pro or euk?
euk
is Fungi pro or euk?
Euk
is Protozoa pro or euk?
euk
Is viruses pro or euk?
neither; acellular bc not technically alive
are helminths pro or euk?
Euk
Do archaea live in regular or harsh environments?
Harsh
Does algae do photosynthesis?
yes
Does fungi perform photosynthesis?
no
Do protozoa perform photosynthesis?
no
Do protozoa have flagella and cillia?
yes
Are viruses cellular in structure?
no
are viruses smaller or bigger than bacteria?
smaller
What is a prion?
a misshappened protein; they are poorly understood; slowly develop always fatal diseases
What are helminths?
Worms; round or flat
What are arthropod vectors?
Vectors that transmit pathogens to humans
READ 13-23 FOR EXAM
DO IT
Antony Van Leeuwenhoek
made handheld microscopes that made it possible to see microbes
What is spontaneous Generation?
when living things come from nonliving matter
Who was spontaneous generation from?
Aristotle
What is pasteur known for doing?
he proved spontaneous generation does not occur even in the presence of air.
What is Koch known for?
he proved microbes cause disease; developed a pure culture
What are Koch’s postulates?
- The suspected organisms should be present in all cases of the disease and absent in healthy animals
- The suspected organism should be grown in pure culture
- Cells from a pure culture of the suspected organism should cause disease in a healthy animal
- The organism should be reisolated and shown to be the same as the original
What is variolation
induce mild small pox to avoid potent form
What is Jenner known for?
vaccinations (cowpox to prevent small pox)
When was chemotherapy developed
in the 1900s (syphilis first treated)
What is Iwanowski known for?
Virology; called infectious particles
What is taxonomy?
naming microorganisms
What are the 7 levels of taxonomy?
- Kingdom
- Phylum
- Class
- Order
- Family
- Genus
- Species
What levels of taxonomy do we primarily use to classify our microorganisms?
Genus and species
