When was the EU established? Was this expected?
1 November 1993, this was expected since cooperation in Europe had been going on in the previous four decades
What are the inner six and the outer sever?
The inner six refers to the six countries (NL, BE, LUX, FR, DE & IT) who created supranational institutions. The outer 7 where lead by the UK, and focussed more cooperation on trade.
What is the Ventotene Manifesto?
A proposal by Altiero Spinelli, to create a federation of European states
What is the BeNeLux?
A custioms union between Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxemburg.
What was the Dunkirk Treaty? When was it created?
A defense treaty between France and the UK, 1947
What was the Brussels Treaty (1949)?
A defense treaty between the BeNeLux, France & Britain.
When was NATO established?
1949
Who were enthausistic and who were not about European integration after WW2?
Enthausastic: BeNeLux, France, Italy (, Germany)
Not: UK, Scandinavia, Switserland
By whom and when was the Council of Europe established?
1949, Belgium, Denamark, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK
What was the OEEC (Organisation for European Economic Cooperation)?
It was an organisation created to help the execution of the Marshall plan
What was the European Defence Cummunity (EDC)?
A proposed idea to create a united European defence system.
What is the Western European Union (WEU)?
A union infoliving the inner six and the UK
What is the EEC (European Economic Community) and the EAEC (European Atomic Energy Comminity)?
Two supranational organisations established in 1956 and 1957 respectively.
Who were the outer 7?
Austria, Denamrk, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK, the formed the EFTA (European Free Trade Association)
Why did other countries not join the inner six?
They either had a non developed economy, or they were wary of the supranational organisations that took away their sovereignty.
Why was UK assenssion to the Inner Six blocked?
The French feared US interference.
What was the Luxemburg compromise? Why was it needed?
The French opposed a switch to a quilified majority voting and thus boycotted Eurpean Council meetings for 7 months. The compomise says that the European Council promised to provide solutions that can be adopted by all members, if a member country has a problem because one of its very important intersts is at stake.
Who blocked the UK (and other) accession to the European Council? What happend after they left politics?
De Gaulle, the countries applied again, a plan for the EMU was agreed upon, talks on establishing own resources financing of the Commities were launched and a proposal for European Political Cooperation (EPC) was agreed upon.
When did the UK, Ireland and Denmark join the European Community?
