A

The inner six refers to the six countries (NL, BE, LUX, FR, DE & IT) who created supranational institutions. The outer 7 where lead by the UK, and focussed more cooperation on trade.

What was the Luxemburg compromise? Why was it needed?

A

The French opposed a switch to a quilified majority voting and thus boycotted Eurpean Council meetings for 7 months. The compomise says that the European Council promised to provide solutions that can be adopted by all members, if a member country has a problem because one of its very important intersts is at stake.

Who blocked the UK (and other) accession to the European Council? What happend after they left politics?

A

De Gaulle, the countries applied again, a plan for the EMU was agreed upon, talks on establishing own resources financing of the Commities were launched and a proposal for European Political Cooperation (EPC) was agreed upon.

Why were the 70’s a difficult time for the Eurpean community?

A

Currency instability, 1973 oil crisis and inflation brought an end to the post-war period. Many governments persued national instead of coordinated policies.

A

A

Many new members were less financially developed, thus budgets were streched, and more integration was made difficult.

A

Why was the single marked project popular?

A

Those who were less of a fan of European Integration (e.g., Marget Thatcher) wanted to liberalize the economy, which the single market would do. Those who were in favor of European Integration were also a fan because this would mean increased European coorperation. i.e. Neo-functionalism and Intergovernmentalism pushed towards further integration.

  1. It introduced a deadline for the completion of the internal marked (31 December 1992)
  2. Facilitated the adoption of harmonized legislation to achieve it
  3. Committed member states to cooperate on economic and monetary policy
  4. It expanded policy competences to include health and safety, and dialogue between management and labour
  5. Expanded decision-making role of the EP
  6. Created association and accession agreement procedures.
  7. Expanded the use of Qualified Majority Voting

A

It reflected the difference between states how much sovereignty they were willing to lose.

A

Because of the large changes happening in Eastern Europe at the end of the Cold War.

A

Denmark and the UK were granted some opt-outs. This lead some to believe that we’d get a à la carte EU, though these fears stopped when the EU refused exemptions for new members Austria, Finland and Sweden.

A

For two years nothing happend, then under German leadership the Lisbon treaty was created.
