Lecture 1 Flashcards
The application of science and engineering knowledge and concepts to care for and restore our natural environment and solve environmental problems
Environmental Engineering
Who does environmental engineering affect?
Everyone and Everything!
Three areas of environmental issues
air quality, land quality, water quality
Poor air can lead to:
smog, respiratory and other illnesses, acid rain, global warming
A known substance in the air that can cause harm to humans and the environment
Air pollutant
An increase in the average air temperature of the earth
Global Warming
Heat from the sun gets trapped inside the glass of a greenhouse and heats up its air.
Greenhouse Effect
more ____ being released in the atmosphere traps more heat
carbon dioxide
Destruction of the Earth’s surface caused by human activities and the misuse of natural resources
Land Pollution
Land and raw materials that exist naturally in the environment undisturbed by humans
Natural Resources
A natural resource that can be replaced by a natural process
Renewable Resource
A natural resource that cannot be produced or re-grown or reused
Non-renewable resource
Problems that arise from land pollution:
acid mine drainage, pesticides and herbicides, landfills
Use the principles of biology and chemistry to develop solutions to environmental problems
Environmental Engineers
involved in water and air pollution control, recycling, waste disposal, and pubic health issues
Environmental Engineers
conduct hazardous-waste management studies to evaluate the significance of a hazard, advise on its treatment and containment, and develop regulations to prevent mishaps.
Environmental Engineers
responsibility of an environmental engineer
- design municipal water supply and industrial wastewater treatment systems
- conduct research on the environmental impact of proposed construction projects
- analyze scientific data and perform quality-control checks
- concerned with local and worldwide environmental issues
What is EIA?
Environmental Impact Assessment
EIA Process
- Environment and Social Baseline Studies
- Project Description and EIA Terms of Reference
- EIA Studies and Impact Analysis
- Management and Monitoring Plans
- Government Review of EIA
- Government Decision on EIA
