lecture 1 Flashcards
Levels of Biological Organization
Molecules -> Organelles -> Cells -> Tissues -> Organs/ Organ Systems -> Organisms-> Populations -> Biological Communities->Ecosystems-> Biosphere
Eukaryotic cell
w/ membrane-enclosed organelles, including a nucleus. e.g. plants, animals, fungi
Prokaryotic cell
bacteria and archaea, simpler and smaller. No nucleus or other membrane-enclosed organelles.
DNA
a long, double helix molecule made up of four types of nucleotides
Chromosome
long DNA molecule, many genes, coiled up inside cell
gene
a segment of DNA that codes for a protein or trait
Genome
Organism’s entire set of genetic instructions
Domain->Kingdom ->Phylum ->Class -> Order ->Family -> Genus -> species
Dumb King Phillip Came over for good stuff
Darwin’s Four Observations
- Individuals within Populations Vary
- Some of the Variation is Heritable
- More Offspring are Produced than Will Survive
- Survival and Reproduction Are Not Random
