Lecture 1 Flashcards

1
Q

What is the definition of physiology?

A

The science of life

The study of how cells, molecules and organs interact in a living being

The branch of biology dealing with the functions and activities of living organisms(physical and chemical processes)

Q

What is the definition of exercise?

A

a form of physical activity that is planned, structured and done to improve at least one aspect of physical fitness that is, strength, flexibility or aerobic endurance.
encompasses a wide variety of activities
is often associated with fitness maintenance or
improvement only

Q

What are the 3 criteria that physical activity is defined by?

A

Duration is the amount of time spent
participating in a physical activity session
Intensity is the rate of energy
expenditure
Frequency is the number of physical
activity sessions during a specific time
period (e.g. one week)

Q

What is the definition of exercise physiology?

A

The study of the effects of exercise on the
body.
Body’s responses and adaptations to
exercises
–Subcellular level to system level
–Acute (short term) to chronic (long term)
adaptations

Q

What are the 5 different types of physical activity?

A
• Aerobic/endurance activity
– Uses large muscles
– Increases HR and breathing frequency
• Anaerobic
– Intense activity of short duration
• Muscle-strengthening
– Improves strength, power and endurance of muscles
• Bone-strengthening
– Feet, legs and/or arms support body weight and muscles
push against bones
• Stretching
– Helps improve one’s flexibility and joint mobility

Q

What are defining characteristics of each type of fitness?

A

Physical fitness-A set of physical attributes related to a person’s ability to
perform physical activity successfully, without undue strain and with a margin of
safety

Health related physical fitness-A physiological state of well-being that reduces the
risk of hypokinetic disease; a basis for participation in sports; and a vigor for the
tasks of daily living. Components include cardio-respiratory endurance, muscle strength endurance, flexibility, and body composition.

Skill related physical fitness-Common components of physical fitness (e.g.,
agility, balance, coordination, speed, power, reaction time) that enable participation in sports and other physical activities; also called performance or motor fitness
