What are ways to medically terminate a pregnancy?
Prostaglandin (lutalyse) but it only works in the 1/2 half of pregnancy. Dose in micrograms!
Which drug should we not use for pregnancy termination?
Estrogen within 5 days of conception prevents embryo implantation but can cause pyometra and bone marrow dyscrasia
Should there be vaginal discharge during pregnancy?
No, unless it is near labor, and clear.
What is the FIRST test you should do when you have a patient come in with vaginal discharge during pregnancy?
Brucella test
What is hypoluteoidism?
Low progesterone ( you need 2 - 5 ng/ml to maintain pregnancy)
What should you be aware of when thinking about supplementing progesterone for hypoluteoidism?
Progesterone relaxes the uterus and tightens the cervix - can cause pyometra if there is an infection.
What is the confirmatory test after a screening test for brucellosis is positive?
Agar gel immunodiffusion for Brucella
What time in gestation does brucellosis cause abortion?
Any stage of gestation
Cats are also susceptible to brucellosis T/F?
False, they are resistant to infection
What is the etiologic agent that primarily infects dogs with brucellosis?
B. canis
What is the treatment for brucellosis for persistently infected animals?
For true elimination, depopulation. Tetracyclines can alleviate clinical signs but does not eliminate carriers.
Where is canine herpesvirus 1 shed?
oronasal and genital secretions
What is the route of infection for canine herpes?
mucosa, transplacental
Clinical signs of canine herpes virus 1?
Ocular inflammation, lymphoid hyperplasia, vesicles on mucosa of vagina and penis
What happens to a late gestation dog that becomes infected with canine herpes virus 1?
Abortion. Naïve neonates that get infected will also die if infected within 2 weeks of age.
