Lect 2 Flashcards
What are some risks:benefit of contraception in dogs and cats?
Difficult to say due to confounding variables (Age, breed, environment, activity) and poorly filtered data
Benefits of contraception in a population
Reduce over-population, reduce ferals, reduce euthanasia of unwanted animals
Risk of contraception in a population
decrease in genetic diversity, … the other ones suck
Risk of breeding for the individual?
wandering/territorial/aggression, STDs, pregnancy risks
Benefits of contraception for the individual?
lower breeding/pregnancy risks, increased life expectancy, reduced disease of reproduction organs
What happens to growth plates in the absents of estrogen in the long bones of young dogs?
They remain open for longer so the long bones continue to grow
So all these studies are pretty hard to rely on since there are so many confounding variables, so what do we do about it?
Acknowledge our ignorance and inform the client.
What happens to LH when and animal is spayed or neutered?
It goes up since there is no negative feedback from the gonads
