What is personality?
Unique way of enduring thoughts, feelings and actions, that characterise a person
Personality types
Most people do not fit neatly into one type, most of us are unique and are a mix.
Five model of personality
O-peness
C-onscientiousness
E-xtraverson
A-greeable
N-euroticism
Strengths of the Big Five
- Predicts psychological outcomes
- Administered in 50 different countries
- Different personality rating were similar to the Big Five.
Limitations of the Big Five
-The questionnaire was in English and had to be translated.
-Weaker evidence in countries other than the US.
Reference-group effect
People evaluate their personality traits by comparing themselves to local norms, rather international norms.
Are personalities inherited?
Personality is shaped by both genetic and environmental factors especially culture.
How assess personality?
Developmental experiences
Cultural influences
Genetic and other biological factors.
What are implicit theories of self and personality
Entity theory => Fixed mindset~ beliefs that abilities and traits reflect a person and is largely fixed and resistant to change
Incremental theory =>Growth mindset~ beliefs that abilities and traits are malleable and can change
Attachment styles
Secure attachment= Positive self, rely on others comfortably.
Avoidant attachment= excessive self reliance and discomfort with intimacy.
Anxious attachment= strong intimacy need and fear of rejection.
