What is self-concept?
Is the collection of beliefs, perceptions and ideas that individuals hold about themselves.
Identity
Is the way individuals understand themselves and are recognized by others.
Sex/Gender differences
Men (young and old) are more aggressive with provocation in naturalistic vs Laboratory settings, than females.
Women are more empathetic, sensitive, and skilled at expressing emotions non-verbally, than men.
Sexual orientation
The Nature of a person’s enduring emotional, romantic and sexual attraction to others.
Intersectionality
Refers to the state and experience of an individual with multiple minority identities, which result in compounded disadvantage.
Sex roles
Behaviours and attitudes that are traditionally associated with males and females, biologically based (child-bearing, breastfeeding).
Gender roles
Behaviours and attitudes that a society considers appropriate for individuals based on their gender such as women being gentle and men being strong.
Gender role ideology
Traditional: Emphasises distinct roles for men and women
Egalitarian: Expect equal roles and responsibilities regarding of gender
