in the pterygopalatine fossa (suspended by ganglionic branches of maxillary nerve: V2)
- anterior to opening of pterygoid canal

between tensor veli palatini and mandibular nerve (V3)
- inferior to foramen ovale

suspended from lingual nerve by two ganglionic branches
- lies on surface of hyoglossus muscle
