Lec 5: Integumentary System Flashcards
Epidermis
Consist of skin, and accessory structures such as:
Hair, glands, and nails
Major functions of integumentary system:
Protection
Sensation
Vitamin D production
Temperature regulation
Excretion
Two major tissue layer:
Epidermis
Dermis
Most superficial layer, stratified squamous epithelium, in deepest layer the mitosis occurs
Epidermis
Five strata:
(deepest to superficial)
Stratum Basale (Germativum)
Stratum spinosum
Stratum granulosum
Stratum lucidum
Stratum corneum
Consist of cuboidal or columnar cells that undergo mitosis about every 19 days
Stratum Basale
Spiny in appearance, flattened appearance and accumulate lipid filled vesicles called lamellar bodies
Stratum Spinosum
Grainy in appearance, Flat and diamond in shaped, cells accumulate more keratin and release lamellar bodies
Stratum granulosum
smooth, translucent layer, clear zone between granulosum and corneum, this thin layer of cells is only present in certain areas of body thick skin of palms, soles and digit
Stratum lucidum
Most superficial stratum of epidermis, consist of 25 or more layers of dead squamous cells filled with keratin, coated and surrounded by lipids
Stratum corneum
