Lec 1: Matter, Measurements, and Calculations Flashcards
Anything that has mass and occupies space
Matter
A measurement of the amount of matter in an object
Mass
A measurement of the gravitational force acting on an object
Weight
Properties of matter that can be observed or measured without trying to change the composition of the matter being studied
Physical properties
Properties that matter demonstrates when attempts are made to change it into new substances
Chemical properties
Changes matter undergoes without changing composition, change form or appearance, no new substances
Physical changes
Changes matter undergoes that involve change in composition, has chemical reactions, new substances are formed
Chemical changes
The smallest particle of a pure substance that has the properties of that substance and is capable of a stable independent existence
The Limit of physical subdivision for a pure substance
Molecule
The limit of chemical subdivision for matter
Atom
Explanations for observed behavior in nature
Scientific models
Cannot be Physically separated into simpler substances
Fixed set of physical and chemical properties
Matter that has a constant composition and fixed properties
Pure substance
Can be Physically separated into two or more pure substances
Properties may vary with composition
A physical blend of matter that can theoretically be Physically separated into two or more components
Mixture
Matter that has the same properties throughout the sample
(Hindi pwede ma separate)
Homogeneous matter
Matter with properties that are not the same throughout the sample
(Pwede ma separate)
Heterogeneous matter
Homogeneous mixtures of two or more substances
