Lec 4 Preventive Cardiology Flashcards
Explain the epidemiologic transition of the Philippines.
Philippines has transitioned from communicable to non-communicable diseases
Top 1 mortality cause
Diseases of the Heart </3
Top 2 mortality cause
Diseases of the Vascular System
Top 5 leading morbidity cause
Hypertension
Top 7 leading morbidity cause
Diseases of the Heart </3
Restraining or reducing the prevalence of a disease; ranges from limitation of occurrence to eradication
Disease Control
Covers measures not only to prevent the occurrence of a disease, i.e. risk factor reduction, but also to arrest its progress and reduce its consequences once established
Disease Prevention
Root causes of a disease are removed so that it does not occur
Eradication
Status short of eradication; occurrence of cases reduced to a great rarity
Elimination
When the proportion of immunes in the population exceeds a certain level, the organism maybe unable to maintain itself
Herd Immunity
Separation of infected persons or animals and at times carriers during the period of communicability
Isolation
Restriction of freedom of movement of persons or animals by virtue of recent exposure (incubation period multiplied by three times)
Quarantine
What can be achieved by interventions under ideal conditions such as clinical trial
Efficacy
Describes the effect of an intervention in actual practice
Effectiveness
Estimate patient risk and assist in decision making
Risk Stratification
