Lec 4 Flashcards
What is the importance of formulating a research problem?
- It is the foundation of the research and if it is well formulated you can expect good study to follow
- Large part of the problem lies in knowing what one is trying to do, you must have an idea about what you want to find not what you must find.
3 it has several forms it may be very simple or very complex - The way you formulate the problem almost determines every step after that from the study design to the analysis
Revise the depression research example.
Notes
not all questions can be turned into problems.
It is complex to transform an idea into a problem to study.
What is the first step into clarity
it is confusion , so take your time to formulate your problem the more clearer it will become for you and it will be easier in the next steps
The sources of research problem are?
People
Problems
phenomena
programs
Most research studies are based upon at least two combination of :-
Study of population : Individuals , people , is the people from which the information is collected
Study of are:- programs, problems, phenomena, which the information is collected from
Consideration in selecting the research problem:-
- Interest, make sure you are interested in
- Magnitude, make sure to know the sufficient knowledge about the research process to be able to visualize the work involved to complete
- Expertise, make sure you have enough expertise for the task
- measurement of concepts, if you are having quantitative studies make sure you know the measurement of the indicators of the study
- Relevance, select a topic that s relevant to you as a profession.
- Availability of data , make sure that secondary data is available and in the format you want before finalizing your topic
- Ethical issue, you should spotlight hoe ethical issue can affect the study population and how to overcome them and this matter should be examined throughly.
Steps of formulating a research problem
- Choose the field of your interest
- Dissect into subareas
- Select what matches your interest
- Raise research question
- Formulate the objectives
- Asses your objectives
- Double check, whether you have sufficient interest.
What is the difference between research questions and objectives
They differ in the way they are written as questions are written as questions while objectives are transforming the questions into behavioral aims, some researchers start from objectives and then generate the research questions, others would not even have objectives and will stop with the research questions.
What are main and subdivision objectives?
Main: Overall statement of main association and relationship
Subdivision: specific aspects of the topic that you want to investigate within the main framework
What is the study population?
It is from whom the information required to find answers to your questions are obtained
What are operational definitions or working definitions?
When you define concepts that you plan to use in your research problem and the could be different than the legal definition
