Lec 23 Flashcards
What does the common carotid artery feed (2)?
External and internal carotid arteries
Internal carotid artery branches to what (2)
Anterior cerebral artery (ACA)
Middle cerebral artery (MCA)
Bilateral Vertebral arteries join to form what (1->2)
Basilar artery then posterior cerebral artery
What are the arteries from the circle of willis that we need to know (5) from rostral to caudal
Where do these arteries run in the brain?
Anterior cerebral artery
Anterior communicating artery
Middle cerebral artery
Posterior communicating artery
Posterior cerebral artery
They run in the subarachnoid space
What parts of the brain does the ACA feed
What parts PCA feed?
superior and medial cortex - from frontal lobes to anterior parietal lobes
inferior and medial temporal lobe, and occipital lobe
What are the three divisions of the middle cerebral artery - what do they feed
Superior branch - lateral aspect of frontal lobe anterio-parietal lobe
Inferior branch - anterolateral aspect of temporal lobe and posterior parietal cortex
Deep branch - feeds body of caudate most of lentiform nucleus
what does the deep branch of the posterior cerebral artery feed
thalamus
Two brain sinuses to know
Superior sagittal sinus - between brain hems
Transverse sinus - between cerebellum and occipital lobe
what drains the blood in the brain and head
primarily internal jugular vein
types of vascular injury (2)
blockage/occlusion
hemorrhage
what is ruptured aneurism
when weakened vessel in the brain balloons and bursts
What is a thrombus
blood clot that forms, could form around plaque
what is embolism
come from somewhere else and get stuck in vessel. E.g. clot that broke free.
