Lec 11 Flashcards
what are the effects of damage to whole one side of somatosensory cortex
complete sensory loss of contralateral side of body
what are the effects of damage to lateral pontine or medulla
loss of sense in contralateral whole side of body (neck downwards) and loss of sense in ipsilateral face.
What is a transverse cord lesion
symptoms
some causes
damage across the whole cross section of spinal cord
- LMN symptoms at level of lesion
- UMN symptoms below region
- loss of all sense
Causes
- trauma
- tumors
- MS (autoimmune dis that affects CNS)
what is central cord syndrome
symptoms
cuases
lesion to centre of cord - may affect a bit of posterior column and a bit of grey matter ‘
Symptoms:
- loss of sensations of pain, temp, crude touch (but why idk)
Causes
- Syringomyelia (fluid filled cavity in spinal cord)
- tumors
- MS
but what happen to areas below inj?
define syringomyelia what is the perpetrator called?
fluid filled cavity in spinal cord, area called a syrinx
What is posterior cord syndrome
symptoms
causes
lesion in the dorsal column area of spinal cord, may also affect anterior horn. Affects all segments below lesion.
symptoms
- loss of position and sense (proprio?) all areas below inj
- may
causes
- trauma
- tumors
- MS
- Vitamin b12 deficiency (leads to demyelination in post column)
- Tabes dorsalis (neurodegenerative disease, result of untreated syphilis)
What is Tabes dorsalis
neurodegenerative disease, result of untreated syphilis
What is anterior cord syndrome
symptoms
causes
Lesion to all of anterior side of spinal cord (bilateral). It spares the posterior columns
symptoms:
- loss of pain and temp sense loss
- Motor loss
Causes:
- trauma
- tumours
- MS
- Infarct (dead tiss by lack of blood supply)
what is an infarct
area of tissue that is dead due to a lack of blood supply.
What is Brown-Sequard syndrome.
What is another term for the syndrome.
Symptoms
Causes
Entire half of spinal cord.
Term: Hemi-cord lesion
Symptoms:
- Ipsilateral paralysis & loss of proprioception/vibration
- Contralateral loss of pain & temperature sensation
** at level of injury and 1 spinal segment below there is also pain and temp sense loss because spinothalamic tract fibers have not yet crossed (spinthal tract is part of antero-lateral path).
