Q

What is a transverse cord lesion

symptoms

some causes

A

damage across the whole cross section of spinal cord

  • LMN symptoms at level of lesion
  • UMN symptoms below region
  • loss of all sense

Causes

  • trauma
  • tumors
  • MS (autoimmune dis that affects CNS)

Q

what is central cord syndrome

symptoms

cuases

A

lesion to centre of cord - may affect a bit of posterior column and a bit of grey matter ‘

Symptoms:
- loss of sensations of pain, temp, crude touch (but why idk)

Causes
- Syringomyelia (fluid filled cavity in spinal cord)
- tumors
- MS

but what happen to areas below inj?

Q

What is posterior cord syndrome

symptoms

causes

A

lesion in the dorsal column area of spinal cord, may also affect anterior horn. Affects all segments below lesion.

symptoms
- loss of position and sense (proprio?) all areas below inj
- may

causes
- trauma
- tumors
- MS
- Vitamin b12 deficiency (leads to demyelination in post column)
- Tabes dorsalis (neurodegenerative disease, result of untreated syphilis)

Q

What is anterior cord syndrome

symptoms

causes

A

Lesion to all of anterior side of spinal cord (bilateral). It spares the posterior columns

symptoms:
- loss of pain and temp sense loss
- Motor loss

Causes:
- trauma
- tumours
- MS
- Infarct (dead tiss by lack of blood supply)

Q

What is Brown-Sequard syndrome.
What is another term for the syndrome.

Symptoms

Causes

A

Entire half of spinal cord.

Term: Hemi-cord lesion

Symptoms:
- Ipsilateral paralysis & loss of proprioception/vibration
- Contralateral loss of pain & temperature sensation

** at level of injury and 1 spinal segment below there is also pain and temp sense loss because spinothalamic tract fibers have not yet crossed (spinthal tract is part of antero-lateral path).
