Lec 17 - Natural Rubber Flashcards
Latex
milky fluid (suspension or emulsion in a liquid w varying refractive index)
the higher the density,
the longer time light takes to pass through
longer chains,
more elastic (length dictated by isopropene #)
latex produced in
laticifiers
articulated laticifiers
in a series of cells
non-articulated laticifiers
in a single cell
rubber latex
a watery liquid. “rubber” particles in suspension
chicle:
a rubber latex once used for gum. from sapodilla > chicle means sticky stuff (wrigleys)
why was latex produced:
its a chemical (noxious and poisonous repellent) used for anti-feedant (locust and chicory)
location of latex in hevea:
inner bark w specialized cells called laticifiers (lat organized in concentric layers outside vascular cambium known as latex mantells
waterproofing with rubber
Spaniards exploring south america dipped hats and cloaks in latex to produce waterproof clothing
problem with rubber for waterproofing with weather conditions
heat > melted
cold > cracked
