Lec 15 conditions of prac Flashcards
Describe the Contextual Interference (CI) effect, including
what happens in acquisition and retention dependent on high
and low CI.
Higher contextual interference leads to slower acquisition but better learning and retention because of the:
- elaboration hypothesis
- forgetting and reconstruction hypothesis
Blocked practice
practice in blocks, finish a skill then move onto the next (1,1,2,2,3,3,)
Serial practice
practice skills in a repeating sequence (1,2,3, - 1,2,3,)
Random practice
practice in random order (2,3,1 - 3,1,2,)
explain which of the 3 ways of organizing practice is most difficult and why
Random practice is most difficult because CI is highest, then serial, then blocked
Contextual interference, and how it affect learning and retention.
the interference that occurs when switching tasks or skills as switching skills disrupts learning and you have to reset. This helps with learning and retention overall but initial acquisition is slower.
elaboration hypothesis
switching between tasks at random allows one to see the unique characteristics of that task compared to others that were just done
Forgetting and reconstruction hypothesis
when you switch between tasks art random you need to reconstruct the solution to tasks multiple times. For example, if you make the same shot over and over again, it’s already lined up and you just use muscle memory to shoot, if you constantly switch shots, you forget the solution to the last shot when you go to do the next and therefore have to line things up again.
make some recommendations for if you were to schedule your own practice
- frequent rests are good
- variation in skills are good
- variation in order of skills practice is good
- practice should have a deliberate focus
what is it called when there is a mix of blocked and random practice. In what situation would you want to use this?
Hybrid practice.
use for particularly difficult skills, or for beginners early in practice to get a foundation
difference between self control practice and yoke practice
self control = participant is able to choose what to practice next, (could be same thing), this can increase learning for some people compared ot yoked
Yoked = paricipant must adhere to practice schedule
diff between part and whole practice
part practice is practicing a part of a skill
wole practice is practicing the whole movement
when is part practice best for learning
if the task is very complex
if the movement is slower of has pauses
if there is a risk for injury with improper form
