What are the 3 main components of a terrestrial plant?
Leaves, stems, roots
What is the function of leaves?
photosynthesis occurs inside leaves
How does photosynthesis happen inside leaves?
Light energy is captured inside leaf cells (carbohydrate sugars) and veins to transport nutrients to other parts of the plants
What parts make up a leaf
blade, veins and petiole (stalk)
Why is there leaf variation?
leaves have different purposes
What are different types of leaves
needle and broad leaves
What type of leaves do evergreens tend to have?
Needle
What are simple leaves?
leaves with a single blade
What are compound leaves?
Leaves divided into leaflets
What are the different types of compound leaves?
Palmate, Pinnate, and bi-pinnate
What does a palmate compound leaf look like?
leaflets attached the the same point at the end of a petiole (like a hand PALM)
What does a pinnate compound leaf look like?
leaflets in pairs along rachis
what does a bi-pinnate compound leaf look like?
leaflets sub-divided further
What is used to describe a leaf?
Overall shape, pattern along the edge of a leaf (margin), shape of tip, and shape of base
What are different leaf shapes?
linear, lanceolate, oblong, elliptical, ovate, cordate
