LEARNING TO BE A BETTER STUDENT Flashcards
is the awareness of one’s thinking and the strategies one uses to learn
METACOGNITION
defined as cognition about cognition or thinking about thinking.
METACOGNITION
WHO identifies two components of metacognition
Psychologist John Flavell (Lai, 2011)
WHAT ARE THE 2 COMPONENTS OF METACOGNITION
metacognitive knowledge & metacognitive regulation.
includes knowledge of one’s own cognitive abilities, knowledge
of cognitive tasks, and knowledge of the strategies to complete the cognitive tasks.
METACOGNITIVE KNOWLEDGE
refers to how an individual monitors and controls his or her
cognitive processes.
METACOGNITIVE REGULATION
the process in which students systematically direct their thoughts, feelings, and actions toward the attainment of their academic goals.
SELF REGULATED LEARNING (SRL)
WHO defines self-regulated learning (SRL) as the process in which students systematically direct their thoughts, feelings, and actions toward the attainment of their academic goals.
ZIMMERMAN (2002)
WHAT ARE THE 3 ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS OF SELF REGULATED LEARNING?
PLANNING
PROBLEM SOLVING
SELF - EVALUATION
increases efficiency, control, and motivation.
PLANNING
allows students to learn to think and look for solutions when
faced with adversities.
PROBLEM SOLVING
increases self-awareness that leads to the better understanding of one’s own emotions, strengths, and weaknesses.
SELF EVALUATION
HE defined four levels of metacognitive learners
DAVID PERKINS (1992)
WHAT ARE THE 4 LEVELS OF METACOGNITIVE LEARNERS?
AWARE
STRATEGIC
TACTICAL
REFLECTIVE LEARNERS
These learners are aware of their thinking processes and are able to reflect on their learning strategies. They are comfortable with ambiguity and are willing to take risks in their learning
AWARE LEARNERS
can plan and organize their learning activities
effectively. They set clear goals and use various strategies to help them achieve them
STRATEGIC LEARNERS
adept at monitoring their learning progress and adjusting their strategies as needed. They are skilled at using feedback to improve their performance
TACTICAL LEARNERS
able to think deeply about their learning
experiences and integrate new knowledge into their existing understanding. They are comfortable with complexity and are able to see connections between seemingly
disparate ideas.
REFLECTIVE LEARNERS
