Learning Thoery Flashcards
Define bowling’s monotropic theory
Attachment is innate we are born with the ability to attach
What are the 4 parts of Bowlbys theory
Adaptive
Social releases
Critical period
Monotropy
Adaptive
Attachment is an innate system , infants are born to attach
Social releases
Infants are born with social releases eg
Smiling , crying triggering a repose in a caregiver
Critical period
Critical period for attachment , if an attachment does not take place during set period of first 2.5 years of infants life then it may not take place
Monotropy
Bowlbys theory was described as mono tropic as there is attachment to 1 caregiver
Most important attachment in child’s development, doesn’t need to be the biological mother
Explain the internal working model
Mental representation child forms relationship with primary caregiver
Serves as model of what relationships are like , builds expectations of what future relationships will be like
Powerful impacts on child’s future relationships Eg peers and own children
Bowlby believes IWM are passed from one generation to the next
Ao3 Bowlbys monotropic theory RTS Lorenz (strength)
Lorenz studied imprinting in Goslings found critical period of 12-17 hours needs to take place , or it would not later
Supports Bowlbys concept of critical period , that infants must atatch within first 2.5 years of life or it would be difficult to later
Ao3 research to contradict shaffer and Emerson
Found children have multiple attatchments
These multiple attatchments may help children develop socially
Contradicting montropy by Bowlby theory
Ao3 bowlbys motnotropic theory
Conducted by hazen and shaver
Found the securely attached children developed happy longer lasting relationships later in life
Whereas insecurely attached children found it hard to form relationships and many were divorced
Supports IWM as a feature of Bowlbys monotropic theory as their early attachments acted as a template for future relationships
