Learning Theory- Social Learning Theory Flashcards
Assumptions of social learning theory
- behaviour learned from environment
- learn within social context= social learning
- classical + operant conditioning is learning directly
- SLT is learning indirectly
- mixture of learning + cognitive
What does Bandura say?
We learn behaviours through observation and imitation.
When child seen kind of behaviour they model it. More likely when person identifies with the model
Term: imitation
Observes then copies behaviours of role model
Term: identification
Observer associates themselves with role model and wants to be like them
Term: modelling
Observer displays/ imitates behaviour they’ve been obersvering
Term: vicarious reinforcement
Learns by observing consequence of the modelas behaviour
Key difference between social learning theory and behaviourism
SLT- processes lead to imitation are just as important
Behavioursm- just stimulus- response, no thought in between
4 stages of mediational processes
1). Attention
2). Retention
3). Reproduction
4). Motivation
Explaination of attention process
Behaviour we see must grab our attention so must notice behaviour to imitate it
Explaintion of retention process
Behaviour must be remembered, may not be imitated straight away as much of social learning is not immediate
Explaination of reproductive process
May not copy straight away, will reproduce behaviour when opportunity occurs.
Explaintation of motivation process
Rewards and punishment that follow a behaviour considered by observer perceived rewards outweigh perceived costs= behaviour more likely imitated vicarious reinforcement
Aim and method of Bandura’s Bobo Doll
A- if aggression can be acquired by observations and imitation
M- controlled experiment, 36 boys girls, 3-6yrs, lab, IV (type of model) manipulated in 3 conditions
1). Aggressive model shown to 24 children
2). Non-aggressive model shown to 24 children
3). No model shown (control cond)
Results and conclusion of Banduras Bobo Doll
R-
1). Aggressive model=made far more imitative aggressive responses
2). Boys more likely imitate same sex models than girls
3). Boys imitated more physically aggressive acts than girls
C- Children able to learn social behaviour such as aggression through process of observation learning
Results of reinforcement bobo doll study
Children in model punished group had learned aggression by observational learning, but didn’t imitate it bc expected negative consequences.
