What is declarative memory?
Memory for facts, dates, events
What types can be long-term declarative memories?
Semantic and episodic
What is semantic memory?
Cultural knowledge, ideas, concepts about world (definitions, historical events, capitals)
What is episodic memory?
Representation of your personal experience (sounds, time, emotions associated with experience)
Which areas produces memories of facts and events?
Hippocampus, parahippocampal region, cerebral cortex
Which areas produces emotional or behavioral memories?
Amygdala, striatum, cerebellum
What is working memory?
Short-term declarative memory for a limited, short time
What is spatial memory?
Declarative memory for certain type of information
What is nondeclarative memory?
Memory without effort like speaking or riding a bike
What is synaptic plasticity?
Ability of synapses to remodel themselves
What is long-term potentiation (LTP)?
Long-lasting increase in synaptic strength, boosts concentraction of calcium ions
What is long-term depression (LTD)?
Long-lasting decrease in synaptic strength
What are the brain structures most closely linked with emotions?
Amygdala, insula (insular cortex), periaqueductal gray
