Learning Aggression Flashcards
Bandura experiment
-pre-test: exp. group 1= preschool kids that see a model attack an inflatable doll. exp. group 2= preschool kids that see a model play gently with the doll. control group= preschool kids that don’t see anything
-results: group 1 was violent with the doll, group 2 played nicely, control group was more aggressive that group 2…
-Conclusion: natural play in children has aggression
Secondary bandura experiment: does it make a difference if the violence is seen live vs TV?
results: people who watched violence on film (TV) displayed more aggression
Today, does TV violence, video games, media, music, etc increase aggression?
yes, it increases testosterone and puts you in a more aggressive state BUT it does not me the you will act on it; aggression is NOT AUTOMATIC
Effects of media violence
- wrongful idea of prevalence (makes it seem like the world is more dangerous than it is & makes other people okay with doing it since “everyone else is”)
- makes us less sensitive to victims since it is so normalized (loses shock value)
- children may imitate, just as much as they may imitate positive behaviour
