League Of Nations Flashcards
why did the league of nations fail?
1
the structure of the LoN was weak .
the Assembly only met x1 yr -> should’ve met more frequently so could discuss more things
unanimous voting system-> too long for assembly to agree on matters
Permanent Court of International J-> could only advise the parties= countries didn’t have to listen bc no serious consequece
why did the sanctions of the League lead to its failure?
Moral sanctions was condemning the aggressors -> the country didn’t have to listen
Military sanctions= using force to make guilty country accept LoN decision-> LoN members had to supply forces at own expenses bc no army so many were reluctant to do so
Economic sanctions= Lon members stopped trading with the guilty country + this would pressure them to accept -> still trade with non-l countries e.g America
why did Americas absence lead to the failure of the league?
why did A not join the League
A known as the worlds policeman n their absence meant Lon lacked leadership
made the Lon politically, militarily, financially weak
didn’t likr ToV -many G refugees in their country
isolationism
didn’t like imperialistic ideologies n thought B+F would use L to expand their Empires
why did the LoN act the way it did about the Manchurian Crisis?
political reasons-> sympathy for J bc founding member
strong, prosperous J M would prevent Communist plague, which China was susceptible to
J part of Permanent Council so could veto anything
economic->depression meant Members couldn’t afford to send their troops
J control of M could bring economic stability + help counter the Depression
USA still biggest trading partner (silk)=sanctions not work
military-> too far
Lon no army= members reluctant to do so bc D so can’t afford
