patriotic G thought it would end quickly and war was a popular
in 1915-16…..
Protesters demanded an end to war. Demonstrations increased fro 500 to 10,00.
war wariness increased
soldiers were worn down by bombs, gun/machine fire and gas, in the front line
G became politically unstable bc……
it was close to defeat and a flu epidemic killed many already weak from a poor diet
army general Ludendorff said that G couldn’t win and advised the K to make G more democratic so the winning allies would treat them more fairly. October
K transferred some of his powers to the R and allowed political parties to form a new government. G were still not satisfied more demonstration followed.

K mutinied and the mutiny spread
soldiers sent to deal with protesters joined the sailors and workers
in just 6 days soldiers’ and workers’ council was governing the towns/cities
K realised he’d lost control, army generals refused to help.
9 nov 1918
K abdicated never to return
Friedrich Ebert leader of SPD, largest political party temporarily took over
promised to hold elections and end war
11 nov 1918
G surrendered ww1 was over

war pensions would cost the government a fortune

ppl felt that traditional family values had been damaged as woman worked in factories during war
factorys owners had made a fortune bc of war but workers had restrictions placed on wages meaning they didn’t financially benefit.

mutiny and revolution began spreading over G
many ex-soldiers and civilians felt that they had been betrayed by the politicians who decided to end war
