Leaf Strucuture Flashcards
The Xylem
The Xylem tissue is the other transport tissue in plants
The Pholem
The phloem transports sugars made by photosynthesis from the leaves to the rest of the plant.
Water
Water evaporates from the leaves by transpiration
Sugar
Sugary sap is transported up and down in phloem vessels. This is called translocation
Water and minereals
Water and minerals are transported up the plant through the xylem vessels. This is called the transpiration stream.
Upper epidermis
The upper epidermis is one cell thick and covers the leaf like a skin.
Palisade cells
Palisade cells have a cylindrical shape. This helps the light penetrate the leaf. Chlorophyll is contained in chloroplast palisade cells.
Stomata
Stomata open andnclose in response to changing conditions EG: light intensity, humidity and carbon dioxide concentration.
