leaf structures Flashcards
upper epidermis
very thin and transparent in order to let light in to the palisade mesophyll
lower epidermis
contains guard cells and stomata (gaps)
stomata
where gas exchange and loss of water by evaporation takes place - opens during day and closes at night
palisade mesophyll
contains lots of chloroplasts so that photosynthesis can happen rapidly
spongy mesophyll
have lots of air spaces to allow gases to diffuse in/out of cells faster, as it increases area to volume ratio
waxy cuticle
helps to reduce water loss by evaporation and is a protective layer found at top of leaf
guard cell
kidney shaped cells that open and close the stomata by absorbing or losing water
when lots of water avaliable the cells fill and open stomata
photosynthesis equation (word)
carbon dioxide + water → (light) glucose + oxygen
photosynthesis equation (chemical)
6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2
