Leadership styles and theories Flashcards
What are Universalist theories?
Propose that there is a single set of traits or behaviors that make a leader effective in all situations.
What is the Great man theory?
Suggests that leaders are born, not made. This theory has little evidence to support it.
What is the Trait theory?
Suggests that certain inherent traits make an individual more likely to be an effective leader. Examples of these traits include intelligence, self-confidence, responsibility, initiative, persistence, and sociability.
What’s the Leadership Grid Model?
A behavioral theory developed by Robert Blake and Jane Mouton, which proposes that the most effective leaders exhibit high levels of both task-oriented and relationship-oriented behaviors.
What are Behavioral theories?
Focus on the actions and behaviors that effective leaders exhibit. They are divided into task-oriented behaviors (focused on accomplishing tasks) and relationship-oriented behaviors (focused on building and maintaining positive relationships with team members).
What are Task-oriented behaviors?
They are behaviors focused on accomplishing tasks or achieving goals, such as planning, organizing, coordinating…
What are Relationship-oriented behaviors?
They are behaviors focused on maintaining positive relationship with team members. Ex: showing concern, resolving conflicts, promoting cooperation and collaboration.
What are Contingency theories?
Suggest that the effectiveness of leadership depends on the situation. The leadership behavior is most effective when it is adapted to the situation and the follower.
What is the Fiedler’s contingency model?
Proposes that effective leadership is a match between a leader’s behavioral style and situational factors. It uses the Least Preferred Coworker (LPC) score to determine if a leader is more task-oriented or relations-oriented.
Why are contingency theories difficult to apply?
Because they depend on the situation. Therefore, there is no general rule about how to behave.
What are the New Leadership theories?
Emphasize the symbolic and emotional elements of leadership, as well as the leader’s ability to inspire and motivate followers.
What is Charismatic leadership?
Suggests that certain leaders have a special charismatic quality that inspires intense devotion and commitment from their followers.
What is Transformational leadership?
Proposes that the most effective leaders are those who can inspire and motivate their followers to exceed their own self-interests for the greater good of the group or organization.
What are the differences between Charismatic and Transformational leadership?
Charismatic: centered on the leader’s personal charisma and appeal.
Transformational: Foster the development and growth of followers and align their values and priorities with those of the organization.
What is Transactional leadership?
Focused on exchanges (or “transactions”) that occur between the leader and the followers. These exchanges typically involve the leader providing rewards or punishments to the followers based on their performance.
