Q

my leadership style

A
  • I think i’m definitely have more of a coaching leadership style which I have obviously gained through my role as a house captain and gymnastics coach
  • when i’m in a situation that required leadership whether that’s when i’m coaching or just when i’m in any group activity i like to take take time to understand what my team members long term goals are and what they want to get out of the task.
  • would also think i’m an both affiliative and democratic leader. I value input and participation from team members to ensure that decisions are made collaboratively. and I always try to promote positivity, teambuilding, conflict resolution.
  • i like to set goals with the people i’m working with and build trust as well.

Q

challenges

A
  • adapting the way you communicate depending on who you are leading and when. I obviously can’t speak the same way to 7 year olds that I coach as I do to year 9s at school.
  • When I first started coaching young children I found it challenging to get them to listen and follow instructions, especially when they all learn differently. Communicating with such young children can be challenging and its important to adjust you language to suit them. Its also important to understand the unique needs of each group member and then adapt my leadership to suit the group as a whole as best I can
  • managing diverse personalities within the school. As house captain, I lead children right from year 7 through to year 12. They all have differ interests and personalities. Some absolutely love house events and others are only there because their parents forced them to and so your constantly dealing with different levels of enthusiasm. that’s when I really have to try my best to foster an inclusive environment and encourage and motivate those who are less enthusiastic.
  • encouraging participation.
  • conflict resolution. conflicts will arise between team members and I have had to mediate disputes and come to a fair solution to satisfy everyone.
