List the different types of leadership style.
- Autocratic
- Democratic
- Paternalistic
- Laissez-faire
Explain autocratic leadership style.
When leaders tell there employees what they want done and how they want it done without getting the advice of followers. This is appropriate where managers have all the information, are short on time and employees are well-motivated. Often used in factories and armed forces.
Explain democratic leadership style.
Leaders offer guidance to group members but also participate in the group and allow input from others. Employees have greater involvement in decision-making.
Democratic persuasive: Leader has made decision and persuades subordinates into the best option.
Democratic consultive: Leader consults with subordinates and then makes a decision
Explain paternalistic leadership style.
Leader decides what is best for employees and has their best interests at heart in every decision. They address employee needs and employees are consulted by the leader makes the final decision.
Based on a parent/child relationship. A softer form of authoritarian leadership.
Explain the laissez-faire leadership style.
Employees can carry out activities and make decisions freely. They work in a relaxed environment and have little direction and guidelines. This is good in creative environments such as web designers however the lack of supervision may lead to poor productivity and motivation.
