- leader is responsible for the success or failure
- leadership: influencing of behaviour in individuals and groups
- group development: emergence of a leader occurs naturally

A
- leader considered to be the one whose acts help the group achieve its preferred outcome
- dimensions of the analysis are: authoritarian, democratic, lassie faire
- 2 broad categories exist: 1. task or production orientated leader (initiates structure) 2. employee orientated leader( shows consideration)

Situational approach to leadership
A
it is not the individual but the forces that act on him/her which make them a leader

A
-combines trait and situation theories 3 elements: 1. leader/ member relations 2. task structuers - more structure easier to manage 3. positional power of the leader

path goal approach
A
- how does the leaders behaviour motivate/ satisfy the subordinate
- expectancy theory
- an individual will work harder if they believe that working harder will lead to various outcomes and if they value the outcome

- greater satisfaction
- greater performance
- when the task is not structure, the subordinates are likely to be distracted
- leaders cannot be selected on personality traits independent of situation
