what are the 3 leadership theorys
Great man theory (nature)
social learning theory (nurture)
interactionist aproach (mixture)
- great man trait leardership theory
great leaders usually men are born not made. they are confident, attractive, confident, assertive and INTELLIGENT
critism is that women are also good leaders
- social learning theory of leadership
good** leaders are made not born**.
Through observing significant others and role models being a good leader and then copying their behaviour.
If behaviour is rewarded, it is more likely to be repeated
- Interactionist approach to leadership
effective leadership depends on :
situation - when no time = autocratic
group factors - experience, age , group size
what are the 2 models of leadership (not theories)
- Fiedlers model (favourableness and task or person orientated approach)
- Chelladuria’s model (SLM RAP) leaders must be able to adapt
Fiedlers model of leadership
AUTOCRATIC leadership is more effective in MOST AND LEAST FAVOURABLE situations
DEMOCRATIC leadership is more effective in MODERATELY favourable situations
**TASK orientated **- leaders focus on efficiency, setting goals and completing tasks as quickly as possible (basically means the same thing as autocratic leadership)
**PERSON orientated **- leaders focus on developing interpersonal relationships within the group. (democratic leadership)
Chelladuria’s model of leadership
leaders must be able to adapt accourding to 3 factors :
- the situation (group size , time available , task difficulty),
- the leader (personality , skill level , prefered leadership style)
- the members (ability , motivation , age)
the more that the REQUIRED BEHAVIOUR and the ACTUAL BEHAVIOUR and the PREFERED BEHAVIOUR matches, the better the groups PERFORMANCE AND SATISFACTION
