What is Trait Theory

- The leader has to be born with the characteristics to be a successful leader e.g, tall
- Leadership is a quality within the personnot a skill they can learn = believing it has nothing to be with the job
- Belief that the success of the business relies on the leaders traits = an important decision for the organisation’s performance
What is Style Theory?

- Highlights what successfull leaders do rather than what they are
- 2 main issues = People Orientation means monitoring goods and reletionships; Task Orientation means achieveing the objects which are set

What is Theory X?
Employees only work for pay - doesn’t seek any resonsiblities and try to avoid it all costs

What is Theory Y?
Employees are satisfied with their job and are self motivated = they can set set personal goals to reach and seek responsibility to gain a promotion

What is the impact of motivating Theory X Staff?
- Employees need to be closly supervised and controlled
- A tall managment structure is required with a narrow span of control
- Managers need to command and coerce employees to carry out a task

- A culture of trust can be created = developed through: structures, delegation and empowerment
- Employes = motivated by the self-actualistion part of Maslow’s hierarchy = responds well to managment training schemes

Autocractic = authoritive, control decisions and closely supervison employees
Democratic = value communication and employee participation in decision making
Laissez-Faire = relaxed approach to managment which allows employees to be self-sufficient as trust has been built
What is Situational Theory?
Leaders should take into account the maturity of the employees and situation to decide how they should display their leadeship

Job maturity = workers skills and knowledge
Psychological maturity = workers self image/respect/confidence

What are the 4 styles of leadership?
Telling - One way communication = autocratic and benefits low maturing subordinates
Selling - Two way communication = subordinates should be taking ownership - those who are enthusiastic but not entirely self motivated
Participative - Descion making is shared = democratic and focuses on reletionships more than tasks
Delegative - Observes decisons = responsibilty passed over - only for mature workers
What factors may influence the style of leadership?
Skill of Staff = democratic - less need for supervision and allows free reign due to competence of workers
Group Size = democratic - could lead to confusion in a bigger group
Financial Constraints = autocratic - tight budgets in order to control spending and regulate expenditure
Leader’s Personality = may naturally lead in a particular style
