What is Leadership?
The process of influencing others to gain their willing consent in the ethical pursuit of missions.
What is Management?
The process of planning, organising, directing and controlling organisational resources in the pursuit of organisational goals.
What is Command?
The legal authority to order subordinates by virtue of rank or assignment. Command requires structure - a chain of command and require compliance.
Inspirational/Transformational Leadership
A leader that motivates their followers with a compelling vision- encourages progression beyond personal interest.
Authoritative Leadership
A leader that mobilises people toward a vision.
Best use: When change requires a new vision or when a clear direction is needed.
Affiliative Leadership
A leader that creates harmony and emotional bonds.
Best use: To heal rifts in a team or to motivate people during stressful circumstances.
Democratic Leadership
A leader that forges consensus through participation.
Best use: To build buy-in or consensus or to get input from valuable employees.
Coaching Leadership
A leader that develops people for the future.
Best use: To help an employee improve performance or develop long-term strengths.
Pacesetting Leadership
A leader that sets high standards of performance.
Best use: To get quick results from a highly motivated and competent team.
Coercive Leadership
A leader that demands immediate compliance.
Best use: In a crisis, to initiate a turnaround or with problem employees.
Transactional Leadership
A leader that delegates tasks in the exchange of rewards, or punishment for poor effort/performance.
Laissez faire Leadership
A leader with a hands off approach, allowing followers to complete tasks as they see fit.
Best use: In creative instances, and in some cases when followers expertise and/or knowledge outweigh that of the leader in the current situation.
