What are the 4 basic functions of management?
Planning, organising, leading and coordinating all the resources of a business.
What is leadership?
Leadership is the ability to influence and direct people in order to meet the goals of a group.
What is management?
Management is the process through which company resources are used and decisions made in order to meet the objectives of the firm.
What is ‘general admission of a business’?
The business as usual or the day to day operations.
What are the 3 levels of management?
- Senior management
- Middle management
- Junior management
What are the 4 leadership styles?
Autocratic, paternalistic, democratic and laissez-faire
What’s autocratic leadership?
Where decisions are made at the top with one-way communication and little to no consultation or explanation - the leaders hold onto as much power as possible.
What’s a paternalistic leadership?
Where the leader will make decisions based on what they think is best for everyone, consulting at every level, but still with little delegation.
What’s a democratic leadership?
Focus of power is much more on the whole group - the leader guides, consults and encourages participation from everyone when making decisions
What’s a laissez-faire leadership?
The leader will set the agenda, but have little to do with day-to-day decisions as they leave the employees to do use their initiative, delegating much more.
Which leadership style uses the McGreggor Theory X approach?
Autocratic
What is the McGregor Theory X and Y?
Theory X explains the importance of heightened supervision, external rewards, and penalties, while Theory Y highlights the motivating role of job satisfaction and encourages workers to approach tasks without direct supervision.
Theory X considers that people dislike work, they want to avoid it and do not take responsibility willingly. While, Theory Y considers that people are self-motivated, and sportingly take responsibility.
What are theory x workers described as?
- Individuals who dislike work and avoid it where possible
- Individuals who lack ambition, dislike responsibility and prefer to be led
- Individuals who desire security
What are theory y workers described as?
- Consider effort at work as just like rest or play
- Ordinary people who do not dislike work. Depending on the working conditions, work could be considered a source of satisfaction or punishment
- Individuals who seek responsibility (if they are motivated)
What’s the difference between managers and leaders?
Leaders have people follow them, whereas managers have people work for them.
A manager administrates, a leader innovates.
