Define the 3 theories of leadership
• trait - innate, enduring
• social learning - learned by observation and copying
• interactionist - some traits, but they are not evident unless a situation (state) demands the leadership behaviour
Characteristics of an autocratic leader
Leader makes most decisions and concentrates on the job to be done or is more concerned with the end product, has a clear, predetermined goal
Autocratic leaders are good when
• novice performers
• male performers
• dangerous situations
• leaders personality is autocratic
Explain Chelladurai’s multi dimensional model of sports leadership
• considers factors that influence leadership style
• situational characteristics e.g. dangerous situations/time constraints
• member characteristics - attributes of the group e.g. age, gender, experience level, group size
• leader characteristics - preferred style of leader based on experiences
• required behaviour - the style that the leader should use, dependent on situation and group
• preferred behaviour - the style that the leader chooses to use
• actual behaviour - combination of required + preferred behaviour, effective leaders can adapt
• group performance - if required and preferred are the same, performance will be good
Characteristics of an effective leader
• good communication skills
• high motivation
• enthusiasm
• clear vision or goal
Define an emergent leader
Emergent leaders come from the group because they are skillful or because the rest of the team selected them
Define a prescribed leader
Prescribed leaders are appointed to a team by an external source.
Benefits of an emergent leader
• accepted by the group
• knows the players
Advantages of prescribed leaders
• more objective
• brings a ‘fresh pair of eyes’
