What is persuasive communication?
Using verbal and visual guidance to change a component of an individuals attitude

What is cognitive dissonance?
Cognitive dissonance uses emotional conflict to change an individuals attitudes
Conflict/dissonance is created when:
• Two or more components (cog, aff, beh) differ
• One of the three components need to change (cog is easiest)
• Persuasive communication is used to introduce new information that challenges current opinion (cog)
• Positive experience used to change affective component
• Conflict brings about desire to change
• The greater the level of conflict the greater the drive for change.
Attitude definition
A learned emotional and behavioural response to a situation. E.g. I like physical activity (emo) so I play sport (beh)
Things that impact attitudes:
Role models/SO
Peers/friends
Parents/family
Media
Religion
Define the cognitive component of an attitude
An individuals beliefs and knowledge, formed through past experience and others. E.g. physical activity is good for you.
Define the affective component of an attitude
An individuals emotional response/whether they like it or not. E.g. I like physical activity.
Define the behavioural component of an attitude
An individuals actual behaviour/how they respond. E.g. I participate in physical activity.
