Layout, Fabricate Weldments, and Project Planning, Costing, & Estimating; Pg 144- 196 Flashcards
Describe what a “Transfer Punch” is.
Transfer Punches are thick pen looking tools used to indent or mark the metals surface in preparation for drilling.
They are designed to be lined up wherever desired and then tapped with a hammer to create an indent.
What tools are used to align butt-joints?
Dogs and Wedges.
What is a “Dog and Wedge?”
A Dog and Wedge are used to align butt-joints.
A dog is usually a piece of flat bar cut for the individual situation.
A wedge is a piece of metal (always cut by a machine to ensure smoothness) that fits and locks into the dog.
What is the ratio of a Wedge?
A 7/1 ratio. No matter is large or smaller.
This ratio provides the right amount of pushing power to hold everything in place, but is also easy to remove when the joint is complete.
How many, and what types of wedges and dogs are there?
There are five notable types of dogs.
Straight Dog
L-Dog
T-Dog
Saddle and Wedge
Threaded dog
How do you calculate Fillet Weld Cross-Sectional Area?
( Weld Throat ) ( Weld Length )
How do you calculate Fillet Weld Throat?
( Weld Leg Length ) ( sin 45°)
How do you calculate Fillet Weld Volume?
( Weld Area ) ( Weld Length )
What is the “POP” system?
P____ O____ and P____
The Project Organization and Planning (POP) system is used to organize work activities and important parts of a project. Such as the order/ steps it takes to fabricate a project.
What is the AISI?
The American Iron and Steel Institute is an association of steel producers that issue steel specifications and co-operate with the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) in using the same numbering system.
How does the AISI numbering system work?
The numbering system consists of a four digit number given to alloy and carbon steels.
The specification of each material is the first two digits.
- The first digit indicates the major class.
- The second digit indicates the sub-class (often the % of the major alloy element)
The last two digits indicates the amount of carbon in hundredths of a percent.
Decipher the following:
“1020”
10 - Carbon Steel
20 - 0.20% carbon
Decipher the following:
“4340”
43 - Ni-Cr-Mo Steel
40 - 0.40% carbon
What does the CSA G40.20 provide?
The CAA G40.20 provides general requirements for rolled or welded structural quality steel.
What is an MTR?
Mill Test Report.
An MTR is a document reporting on tests done on batches of material.
