Joint Design and Welding Symbols: Pg 56-91 Flashcards
What is the difference between a Weld Symbol and a Welding Symbol?
A Weld Symbol is used to identify the shape of the weld.
A Welding Symbol contains the the combined arrow, reference line, weld symbol, and the elements.
What is the purpose of a “break” in an arrow for a welding symbol?
For some joints to be welded, sometimes the arrow has a break to point out a specific point that is to be bevelled when it may be unclear.
What shape is a cruciform joint?
A + shape.
The “arrow” side of a welding symbol is on the…?
Bottom.
The “other” side of a welding symbol is on the…?
Top.
In what order would one follow multiple reference lines?
The line closest to the arrow, regardless of direction will always be first.
The strength of a fillet weld is governed by what?
Throat thickness.
In what measurement are fillet welds sized?
In millimetres or inches.
When the fillet welds are on both sides of the joint, their sizes must be specified…?
When the fillet welds are on both sides of the joint, their sizes must be specified on both sides.
Dimensions in mm are converted to US customary units to the nearest size in /” intervals.
Dimensions in mm are converted to US customary units to the nearest size in 1/16” intervals.
The size of a fillet weld with unequal legs is specified where?
Also to the left of the weld symbol.
ie. 10 x 15 fillet weld
The welding symbol doesn’t specify which dimension belongs to which unequal leg, and therefore this information can be found where?
On the drawing.
Describe groove weld sizing.
Depth (throat) [Root]
______ Degree
Depth- length from top to bottom of the beveled part.
Root- bottom distance of the bottom
Degree- angle the bevel is sloped down.
Where is the plug weld size (or diameter) located?
It is located to the left of the plug weld symbol.
At what end of the hole, is the diameter of a plug weld measured?
The bottom.
