Lay beliefs
The beliefs of layman whose definitions of health and illness vary w each other and medical concepts, impacting on their behaviour
Negative definition of health
Absence of illness
Functional definition of health
Still able to do the things they normally do if healthy = ability to do things
Positive definition of health
State of wellbeing and fitness
Health behaviour
Activity that impacts on health or helps to prevent illness
eg. Smoking is bad for health
eg. Exercising is good for health
Illness behaviour
Activity of ill person to define their illness and seek a solution
Lay referral
People discuss symptoms with others before visiting the doctor - delay in seeking help
Sick role behaviour
Formal response to symptoms - acting as a patient
Types of patients and their adherence to treatment
- Deniers - claim symptoms don’t affect life and hide them, don’t take drugs or attend clinics
- Acceptors - accept diagnosis and follow advice, control symptoms
- Pragmatists - use preventative medication but only when symptoms are bad, accept disease but see it as mild
