Laws of Inheritance Flashcards
What is a dominant allele?
An allele that, whenever present, will always be expressed
What is a recessive allele?
An allele, where if the dominant allele isn’t present, the recessive allele will be expressed
Each characteristic contains how many alleles? and how are dominant and recessive alleles represented?
- Each characteristic contains 2 alleles from each parent
- A = Dominant, a = Recessive
What are heterozygotes?
Refers to a genotype having different types of alleles
What is Homozygote Dominant?
Refers to a genotype having dominant alleles only
What is Homozygote Recessive?
Refers to a genotype having recessive alleles only
What is the definition of Genotype?
Genetic composition of an organism
What is a Phenotype?
Set of observable traits of an organism
List Mendel’s 3 laws of Inheritance
- Law of Dominance: A trait will try to conceal another trait in Heterozygotes
- Law of Segregation: Two alleles equally separate into four gametes (Gamete is when two Haploids combine)
- Law of Independent Assortment: Genes don’t influence each other
