Objective:
Unbiased, and impartial (neutral)

Laws are mandatory, restrictions that apply to all members of society,
Rules
however rules are optional, and it only applies to those who chose to adopt it as their own
What is the definition of Law
A set of rules of conduct established by governments, that every individual in a society must follow and obey
What are two factors that can cause law to change
- the complexity of a society
- and the amount of people
The 4 main functions and purposes of law
To establish rules of conduct
Ie: Highway Traffic Act (speed limits), Criminal Code, etc.
- To provide a system of
enforcement
Ie: Policing (Fed=RCMP, Prov=OPP, Mun=Ottawa Police) and Court System
-To protect rights and freedoms
Ie: Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
-To provide protection for all members of society
Ie: Labour laws, contract law, etc.
-To help resolve disputes peacefully – creates a sense of order
Ie: Rock/paper/scissors, neighbourly disputes, mediation/arbitration, etc.
