Lateral rotators of the hip Flashcards
What are the lateral rotators of the hip?
piriformis Gemellus superior Gemellus inferior Quadratus femoris obturator internus Obturator externus
What is the origin and insertion obterator interns?
Originates on deep surface of obturator membrane.
What is the insertion of obturator internus?
greater trochanter
where does the fibers run for obturator internus?
Fibers exit pelvis through lesser sciatic foramen
Tendon can be observed between and deep to gemelli.
Force is redirected by up to 90°!
What is the origin of obturator externus?
originates from the external surface of the obturator membrane
What is the insertion of obturator externus?
into the trochanteric fossa.
Why is the obturator internus grouped with the adductors but it is a lateral rotator?
it is innervated by the obturator nerve; by location and innervation it is grouped with the adductors
What is the origin of quadratus femoris?
lateral aspect of ischium
What the insertion of quadratus femoris?
quadrate tubercle on intertrochanteric crest.
What is the origin of piriformis?
ant. surface of sacrum
What is the origin of Superior gemellus?
external surface of ischial spine
What is the origin of inferior gemellus?
upper aspect of ischial tuberosity
Where does the piriformis, obturator internus, superior/inferior gemellus insert?
These four insert on greater trochanter of femur, laterally rotate the extended femur, and abduct the flexed femur.
What nerve innervates the lateral rotators?
nerve related to the tibial nerve
What is the exceptions to the lateral rotators innervation?
obturator externus (obturator nerve) piriformis (nerve related to the gluteal nerves)
