innervation of the gluteal region Flashcards
What is the innervation of the buttock?
cluneal nerves
illiohypogastric nerves
What is the origin of the clonal nerves?
dorsal rami of the lumbar and sacral vertebrae (superior and middle cluneal NN)
posterior femoral cutaneous nerve (inferior cluneal NN)
What is the Sciatic nerve sometime split into?
split by piriformis into its tibial (inferior) & common fibular (superior) components
What is sciatica?
symptoms of pain in the lower back, gluteal region, thigh or leg caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve or one of its roots.
What is piriformis syndrome?
irritation of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle, and may have an array of underlying causes.
What may lead to piriformis syndrome?
Any activity that produces weak gluteal muscles (relative to hip flexors and adductors), from prolonged sitting to rowing, running, and cycling, may result in a compensatory hypertrophy of the piriformis muscle
What may sacroiliac joint dysfunction and falling injuries may also lead to?
piriformis syndrome
Where is piriformis syndrome most prevalent?
where the common fibular nerve passes through the belly of the piriformis; even normal use may lead to piriformis syndrome in such cases
What is the innervation of tensor fascia lata?
Superior gluteal N (L4, L5, S1)
branch of common perroneal
What is the innervation of Glut max?
Inferior gluteal N (L5, S1, S2)
branch of Common perroneal
What is the innervation of Glut max/min?
Superior gluteal N (L5, S1)
branch of common perroneal
What is the innervation of piriformis?
Nerve to piriformis (S1, S2)
branch of commo perroneal
what is the innervation of obturator internus?
Nerve to obturator internus
(L5, S1, S2)
branch of tibial
What is the innervation of superior/inferior gemellus?
Nerve to obturator internus
(L5, S1, S2)
branch of tibial
What is the innervation of quadratus femoris?
nerve to quadratus femoris (L4, L5,S1)
branch of tibial
