acetabulum and hip joint Flashcards
What is the acetabulum?
incomplete ring of bone formed by the intersection of the ilium, ischium, and pubis at the triradiate cartilage
Is the acetabulum fused in adults?
yes
What completes the incomplete ring of the acetabulum?
triradiate cartilage
What is the transverse actetabular ligament?
The transverse acetabular ligament spans the inferior bony gap of the ace tabular and forms the ace tabular foramen
what is the acetabular foramen?
opening formed between the ligament and the central acetabular fossa
What is in the ace tabular fossa?
interartricular fat pad that is on the lunate surface
What is the acetabulum labrum?
ring of fibrocartilage that projects beyond the bony rim of the acetabulum
What is the purpose of the acetabulum labrum?
improves the congruence or fit of the femur head into the acetabulum fossa
Where does the ligament of head of femur carry?
vasculature and nerves going to the head of the femur
it projects through the ace tabular foramen
How does the synovial membrane attaches to the acetabulum and the head of the femur?
attaches around the head of the femur, extends down the neck of the femur like a sleeve, and reflects back to the rim of the acetabulum.
the synovial membrane attachment allows for what?
allows the synovial membrane to bunch up and stretch out to accommodate the large range of movement (ROM) of the femur.
What is the zone of obucularis?
fibrous joint capsule wraps around the neck of the femur and is smaller in diameter than the head, which promotes joint stability
What does the synovial folds accommodate?
accommodate movement of the femoral head within the acetabulum.
What limits the range of motion of the hip joint?
ligament of the head of the femur
limit the range of motion to the area defined b the fat pad
Why does the ligament of the head of the femur limit the range of motion of the hip joint?
it is too thick to fit between the femoral head and acetabulum
