gluteal MM Flashcards
What are the gluteal muscles homologous to in the forelimb?
deltoids
gluts are larger and more complex
What are the gluteal MM?
Maximus
medius
minimus
What is the gluteal or natal fold?
defines inferior border of the buttocks
this is no the border of gluteus max
Where does glut. max cross the natal fold?
may cross the gluteal fold, as on the left, or be entirely superior to it, as on the right.
What aid the most superficial muscle of the gluts in the superior lateral region?
gluteus medius
What is the origin of the gluteus max?
posterior ilium to posterior gluteal line
dorsal surface o sacrum and coccyx
sacrotuberous ligament
What is the origin of the gluteal medius?
external surface of ilium between the posterior and anterior gluteal lines
What is the origin of gluteal minims?
external surface of ilium between the inferior and anterior gluteal lines
What is the posterior gluteal line?
between origins of gluteus maximus and medius
What is the anterior gluteal line?
between origins of gluteus medius and minimus
What is the inferior gluteal line?
marks inferior border of origin of gluteus minimus
what is the insertion of gluteal max?
deep distal 1/4 gluteal tuberosity of femur
most fibers onto iliotibial tract
what is the action of the gluteal max?
Extends thigh(especially from flexed position)
lateral rotator
steadies thigh and assit in rising from sitting
What is the insertion of the gluteal medius?
lateral surface of greater trochanter of femur
What is the insertion of gluteal minimus?
anterior surface of greater trochanter of the femur
What is the action of gluteal minims and medius?
abduct and medial rotate thigh
keeps pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is weight bearing and opposite side during its swing phase
How is abduction achieved by glut medius?
fibers that flex and medially rotate are fewer, shorter, and have less mechanical advantage.
fibers that extend and laterally rotate are more numerous, longer, and stronger.
they cancel each other out and get pure abduction
What does the small gluts help with when the weight is on one foot?
are abductors and counteract the tendency for the pelvis to tilt when the body weight is borne on one foot during walking and running
What is a positiveTrendelenburg test indicate?
weak small glutes based on pelvic tilt and dragging of the contralateral limb
What does individuals may have when positive for a trendelenburg test?
Affected individuals may lean laterally in the direction of the weak gluteals to counteract the pelvic tilt
What is a Duchenne limp?
leaning laterally in the direction of the weak gluteals to counteract the pelvic tilt
To make a safe inter muscular injection into the gluteal region where must the fingers be placed?
by placing the thumb on the anterior superior iliac spine and the index finger on the tubercle of the iliac crest (the palpable lateral eminence of the ilium); the safe site is in the triangle defined by the thumb, forefinger, and iliac crest.
What is avoided by using the correct intermucular injection site?
superior gluteal artery
sciatic nerve
What is the innervation of the Gluteus Max M?
inferior gluteal nerve
